چکیده

The scanning microwave radiometer (RM) was launched on August 16, 2011, onboard HY-2 satellite. As the one of primary parameters retrieved from HY-2 RM, the sixmonth long from Jan to Jun 2012 global total water vapor column (WV) obtained from HY-2 scanning microwave radiometer were preliminarily validated using other operational spaceborne radiometer observations. The gridded water vapor productions of Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) were seen as “true data” in this inter-comparison. For the global scale, the bias and RMS difference of the dataset of these space-borne collocated WV observations was respectively -0.24 mm and 1.19 mm during this six-month period. With analysis of global map of mean difference of the collocation between HY-2 RM and SSM/I, the map of bias distribution appeared that there were a positive deviation about 1mm in the tropic ocean where the precipitation and humidity were in relative high level, a negative deviation in the coastal and near-shore regions. The results suggested that accuracy of retrieval algorithm for HY-2 WV productions obviously depends on latitude. There were potential and room for improvement of retrieval accuracy of WV, for correcting overestimation of WV in the tropic sea and underestimation in the inshore regions relative to SSM/I observations.

Water vapor observations with SAR, microwave radiometer and GPS: comparison of scaling characteristics

The knowledge of spatial distributions of water vapor is very important in atmospheric studies. Often satellite observations, for instance AVHRR, are used to study spatial distributions of water vapor. This method, however, has a limited spatial resolution of about 1 km and does not cover the entire atmospheric column. An alternative way to estimate the spatial behavior of the water vapor is to...

Using microwave observations to assess large-scale control of free tropospheric water vapor in the mid-latitudes

[1] The hypothesis of large scale control of midlatitude water vapor is evaluated through reconstructions of the water vapor field using a Lagrangian advectioncondensation model without microphysics or diffusion. The reconstruction is validated against satellite observations in the 183.31 ± 1 GHz band from the AMSU-B radiometer following a model-to-satellite approach. Because microwave radiatio...

Potential soil moisture product from the Chinese HY-2 scanning microwave radiometer and its initial assessment

The Chinese HY-2, a satellite designed for ocean dynamic environment monitoring, was launched on August 16, 2011. The onboard scanning microwave radiometer (RM) is primarily designed for sea surface temperature and wind speed mapping. However, our objective of this investigation is to exploit the large amount of land observations of RM and to extend the mission scope to the retrieval of surface...

The Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) onboard the Global Change Observation Mission 1–Water (GCOM-W1) was launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in May 2012. The AMSR2 is the follow-on model of the AMSR-Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) onboard the Aqua satellite. An assessment of the reliability of the soil moisture estimations from the newly launched passive se...
